Gang exploits small girl to steal cash from shops

QINGPU District prosecutors are investigating a six-member gang who allegedly taught a 10-year-old girl to steal cash totaling more than 500,000 yuan (US$79,125) from shops.

Two suspects have been arrested on charges of theft; the other four are still under investigation.

Prosecutor said the gang worked in a team to cover up the girl as she reached her little hand to the cashier to take money.

They would pretend to be tough customers to distract shop assistants, haggling over prices and asking them to fetch goods from the warehouse, prosecutors said.

While the shop assistant was briefly absent, the girl would sneak into the counter, open the cashier and remove the money. She hid the cash in her clothes and walked out of the shop calmly.

Prosecutors said the gang led the girl to steal 6,900 yuan from two shops in Pudong last December. On January 1 this year, the gang was caught by a shopkeeper while stealing in a well-known clothing market on Qipu Road.

One suspect pretended to be the girl's father and asked the shopkeeper to free the girl, arguing that she was too young. But the shopkeeper insisted on that the "father" pay 1,000 yuan to settle the case before police arrived.

Prosecutors said the gang had stolen more than 500,000 yuan in six months. The girl also had her share of the stolen money. Her parents will face criminal charges for hiding illegal income.
