Gang of bus robbers end up in prison
THE leader of a gang of six responsible for a bus robbery early this year in the city's suburban Minhang District was sentenced to death with a two-year reprieve yesterday.
The other five received prison terms ranging from life to 10 years at the Shanghai No. 1 Intermediate People's Court.
The gang tried to rob passengers on a bus at the Zhuhang Station, beating and stabbing those who resisted. The gang fled in a minibus.
The court yesterday convicted the six, including the driver of the minibus, of robbery and sentenced Zheng Zhibao to death with a two-year reprieve, Yang Mingbing, Zhao Shiyin and Li Guocai to life in prison, Li Jia to 15 years in jail and minibus driver Xiang Ningling to 10 years. The minibus was confiscated.
Gong Yiming, chief judge of the court, said: "The suspects were robbing on a bus, public transport, and stabbed one of the victims critically - both aggravations to the robbery."
Gong said he also imposed heavy sentences because all six had criminal records and, rather than feeling guilty, denied their crimes after being caught.
The robbery happened about 4pm on January 3 when the bus arrived at the station on Hongmei Road S.
Four of the gang boarded the bus by the front door while another came on at the back and starting to rob the people.
A passenger surnamed Wang demanded they stop and Yang punched him in the head. Wang and three friends fought the gang.
Wang and his friends left the bus and the gang pursued them, Zheng taking out a knife and stabbing Wang three times. He was later treated for a ruptured small intestine.
The gang fled in Xiang's minibus but were all caught within three days.
Wang and his friends, all from east China's Anhui Province, were later praised for their heroism - each received 1,000 yuan (US$157) from the district government and their medical fees were covered.
