Gas blaze paralyzes Bund traffic
TRAFFIC in the Bund area was paralyzed for about two hours this morning after a fire was sparked by a broken gas pipe at a construction site.
Traffic did not resume until around 9:50am and no casualties were reported, Xinmin.cn reported.
Gas workers closed the pipe's valve around 10:10am, the report said.
An excavator broke a 0.5-meter-wide underground gas pipe at a construction site near the intersection of Zhongshan Road S. and Fuxing Road E. in Huangpu District around 7:10 am, the report said.
Gas leaked from the pipe, igniting a big fire one hour later. The flames engulfed high voltage power cables and trees nearby.
The fire also damaged three traffic lights resulting in severe traffic jams in the area, particularly along the Bund between Shiliupu and Nanpu Bridge, commuters told the Website.
Traffic between Fuxing Road E. and Shandong Road was totally cut.
