Gas tanks burn, blow up in crash

A TRUCK loaded with 250 cylinders of acetylene collided with a van yesterday morning in the city's Yangpu District, causing a fire and explosion that injured two drivers.

The drivers were rushed to a hospital and are in stable condition. One suffered fractures and the other had slight injuries.

A witness, Chen Yongqing, said the van rear-ended into the truck at around 4:30am on Jungong Road near Zhayin Road. About half of the cylinders flew out of the truck. Acetylene is highly flammable, and 34 cylinders caught fire, including two that exploded.

Three fire engines rushed to the scene and used foam and water to control it. Firefighters left at about 8am and left one engine to monitor the scene. All cylinders were checked for leakage.

Police cordoned off the two-way Jungong Road for more than two hours.
