German grabs knife, stops bloodshed

LARISZA Pilgram, a 24-year-old German woman, grabbed a kitchen knife on Thursday to keep a conflict between her neighbor and his relative from turning into a bloody attack in downtown Jing'an District.

Her Chinese language tutor, surnamed Guo, disclosed the incident online, saying her bravery should win a thumbs-up while other residents and even security guards in the building just looked on instead of doing anything to stop the escalating fight.

Pilgram said that in Germany, someone failing to render aid in such a situation could be in trouble with the law.

Pilgram said another person ran to get security guards, who came back with the police.

"I don't feel angry about it, because they have their own families, and they can decide to protect their life," Pilgram said, saying she was scared, too.

"No security guard at the residential complex dared to intervene, and my German student helped avoid the escalation of the incident," wrote Guo, whose post caused an online stir.

Pilgram, who is living at the residential community known as Jing'an Sijiyuan on Shimen No. 1 Road, dashed out and grabbed the knife on the ground after it slipped from one of the combatants who was trying to use it.

She ran into her apartment, locked the door from inside with the knife and then waited until the police arrived.

Pilgram said she saw the man apparently wanted to kill her neighbor with the knife in his hand.

"I have to do something to help him," she said, describing the situation as "very bad."

Pilgram arrived in Shanghai about six months ago.

Police said the incident was triggered by financial disputes.

Security guards and property managers at the building declined to comment yesterday.
