Girl from Jiangxi leaves hospital after eye surgery

THE 12-year-old girl who took a five-hour taxi ride all the way from Jiangxi Province to Shanghai to treat her wounded eye was discharged from the hospital yesterday.

Wu Meihui from Poyang in Jiangxi was hit by a bamboo stick in her right eyeball while playing with her cousin on June 13. She was rushed to Shanghai as a doctor said she needed professional treatment within 24 hours by a large hospital in Shanghai. Her uncle posted a microblog for help which drew police attention and the family was escorted to Fudan University Eye Ear Nose Throat Hospital.

After an emergency surgery, doctors saved her eyeball but it is unlikely that the girl would regain her eyesight due to the severity of her injury.

Eye doctors said Wu's right eye lost sensitivity to light and the situation didn't improve after the surgery. It is unlikely that another surgery would restore her eyesight. They told Wu's parents to monitor her both eyes as her left eye may also get infection, and her right eye may shrink in the future.
