Gong elected as mayor of Shanghai
GONG Zheng was elected mayor of Shanghai by the local legislature yesterday.
The 15th Shanghai People’s Congress elected the mayor at its fourth session.
Gong was named acting mayor of the city in March after the former Shanghai Mayor Ying Yong was appointed Party Secretary of Hubei Province in February.
Gong, who was born in March 1960, hails from Suzhou in neighboring Jiangsu Province.
He was the former vice head of China’s General Administration of Customs; Party secretary of Hangzhou, Zhejiang Province; vice governor of Zhejiang; governor of Shandong Province and vice Party secretary of Shandong.
He is also a member of the 19th Communist Party of China Central Committee.
Also, Liu Xuexin was elected director of the city’s supervisory commission.
Liu, who was born in December 1963, is a native of Shandong Province and a member of the Communist Party of China Central Commission for Discipline Inspection.
He was formerly vice head of Tianjin Customs, head of the discipline inspection commission in Fujian Province, director of the province’s supervisory commission and a member of the standing committee of the CPC Fujian provincial committee.
