Groom calls firefighters to help him get his bride
HOLDING a bunch of flowers, a groom knocks on the door, squeezes red envelops full of money inside and shouts sweet words, hoping the bride's friends and relatives will open the door for him.
It is a scenario typical of traditional Chinese weddings that before picking up the bride, grooms must pass a series of difficult tests, such as retrieving a key from a block of ice, answering weird questions or doing push-ups.
But a wedding yesterday ended up with firefighters arriving to help as the anxious groom tried to pick the lock of a door to get around a trick of the bride's family. But the door got stuck as the lock broke.
The groom went to the bride's apartment to pick her up, but her family "refused" to let him in. In vain, he spoke all the sweet words in his repertoire. There was no answer. Then he picked up the phone to call 119, a local resident wrote on Weibo.
He also uploaded a picture showing two firefighters arriving at the door and trying to fix the broken lock. The post flashed across the Internet.
Some said they also had a "tough time" as a groom picking up their bride.
Others expressed anger, blaming the groom for abusing public resources by asking firefighters to get involved.
The resident later deleted the post and explained that they were not wasting public resources.
"We told the firefighters clearly that we broke the lock but the door was still not open," the resident wrote. "We are not making fun of the incident, and we had to ask them for help as there was no other way."
As tricks get tougher, some grooms are taking lock-picking equipment. "Their equipment is actually a way to threaten the bride's family to open the door in the game," said a web user. "I can't believe it that they really tried to crack the lock."
