Growing number of 'leftover men' fire up adult toy manufacturers

IF we didn't know it yet, the truth is finally out. More "leftover men" in China are buying adult toys, confirmed manufacturers who reported a significant jump in sales last year.

Much of the sale had to do with gender imbalance in the country where men outnumber women at certain ages, the makers of the toys said yesterday.

At the 10th annual China International Adult Toys and Reproductive Health Exhibition, which opened at the Shanghai International Exhibition Center in Hongqiao area yesterday, vendors said sales, especially those for men, increased by 30 to 40 percent last year.

With a surge in demand, manufacturers are focusing on designing high-end sex toys with new technologies to meet the increasing needs of China's "leftover men and women," who are usually well-educated, have high purchasing power.

Leftover men and women are usually referred to unmarried individuals between the ages of 25 and 35.

A few others fall in a group termed indoorsy - borrowed from Japanese term Otaku, and referred to someone who stays at home all the time and doesn't have a social or love life.

"Last year, we enjoyed 30 percent jump in sales for men's products," said a manager surnamed Jiang who worked for Fun Factory, a German company producing adult products.

"Leftover and indoorsy men were the main buyers," said Jiang, adding that sales of Fun Factory doubled across Asia.

Wang, a company representative for Rendu, which sells products that claim to boost sexual prowess, said the adult sex toy market in China was expanding as there were more men than women who were single.

"Being single, a question is always asked: what about their sex life? Toys and sex products may be a solution," said Wang.

Wang said the company had signed contracts with over 60 sales agents last year to sell the products online.

Chinese census data shows a gender ratio imbalance among men and women during marriageable ages. There are 136 males for every 100 females among people born after the 1980s. Nearly 12 million men between the ages of 30 and 39 are unmarried compared to 5.82 million women in the same age group, a survey conducted by Jiayuan.com, a major wedding website, found.

And as demand grows, so does ingenuity.

One foreign firm displayed a new vibrator for women, which has an app that can be installed on phones or other related devices. Another vendor promoted a sex doll for men which had features of a popular Japanese adult movie star.

The exhibition runs until tomorrow. Organizers said the annul event have attracted 130 manufacturers this year.

As an added attraction, the exhibition also features performances by Japanese adult movie stars and lingerie shows.
