Guangdong bids for Expo 2025
GUANGDONG Province will bid to host a World Expo after 2020 to become the second place in China following Shanghai to host the world fair, a senior official of the province said today.
Expo 2025 will be the earliest date for a Guangdong bid because the International Exposition Bureau rules that a country should wait for at least 15 years to host another Expo.
The province had prepared for the bidding since 2008 and had made an oral submission to China's central government, Chen Wenjie, director of the China Council for the Promotion of International Trade Guangdong, said during Guangzhou Cultural Week at the Expo in Shanghai.
Jean-Pierre Lafon, president of the BIE, said he welcomed the province's bid to host the Expo and believed the energetic province could host a successful fair. But it was too early to announce which city would host the event.
"We wish our dream (to host the Expo) would come true 10 years later," he said.
It will take more than 10 years from bidding to the opening of the Expo. The host country should first apply to the BIE and received inspections from the bureau six months later. A ballot would then be held among BIE members to decide the final winner.
China began bidding to host the Expo 2010 from December, 1999, and defeated Moscow in Russia; South Korea's Yosu, Poland's Wroclaw and Mexico City to win the bid in December, 2002.
The province had the largest number of Urban Best Practices cases at the Expo Shanghai, which means it had a deep understanding of the World Expo and had many experiences to share on urban development, he said.
