Guard sent back to the slammer

A SECURITY guard at Japanese retailer Uniqlo was sentenced to four months in jail and fined 3,000 yuan for stealing a laptop from a customer, Zhabei District People's Court said yesterday.

The convict surnamed Qin, 37, was a repeat offender and had served eight years in jail before, also for stealing.

He was released last year and got a job as a security guard at the local Uniqlo outlet on Gonghexin Road.

The court heard that Qin opened a customer's bag and tried to walk away with his Macbook Air laptop on January 20. Prosecutors said the customer, surnamed Liu, had put the bag on a shelf and went to pay for his purchases at the counter just five meters away from the shelf.

Qin hid the laptop under his uniform and hid the bag behind hanging clothes. He tried to sneak away, but he was caught by Liu before he could leave the shop.

The laptop was valued over 7,800 yuan (US$1,269).
