Guns and illegal knives melted down
MORE than 300 guns and 2,200 illegal knives seized by Shanghai police were destroyed in a steel plant in Baoshan District today.
The metal parts were melted down and recycled, while nonmetallic parts were crushed.
"We got these illegal weapons mainly three ways: the public handing them in, seizures during routine patrols and seizures during crimes," said Shan Xuewei, a high-ranking officer with Shanghai police. "Now we are investigating online sales of imitation guns with the cooperation of other police agencies."
Authorities seized 308 guns; 13,256 bullets; 343 imitation guns and 2,251 illegal knives so far this year. Most of the guns and bullets were handed in by individuals and firms.
There have been 18 cases of gun crimes this year involving 26 arrests.
