Haibao gains magical power

HAIBAO, the mascot of the 2010 World Expo in Shanghai, now has a gender, a definite character and even a best friend.

Haibao is a baby creature from the sea who has magical powers to become a robot and his best pal is a five-year-old girl.

The Shanghai Expo organizer yesterday released a five-minute preview of a 52-episiode cartoon about the mascot.

This gave him a personality and story for the first time since he was announced as the Expo mascot in December, 2007.

Bei Bei, a charismatic and clever girl, was Haibao's best friend, said Hong Bing, a deputy professor of the Shanghai Theater Academy China and cartoon director.

The cartoon "Coming Haibao" would be telecast on about 200 channels around world next spring, said Hu Jinjun, deputy director of the Bureau of Shanghai World Expo Coordination.

It tells a story of an alien villain attacking Earth as Haibao and his friends come to the rescue.
