Hamburg seeks staff, sign language training begins

HAMBURG is looking for 50 staff for its Expo pavilion from next May.

The positions include 40 to 50 guides and volunteers in "Hamburg House," the city's Urban Best Practices Area pavilion, as well as up to 10 assistants during Expo 2010.

Assistants must be able to speak Mandarin, German and English while guides must be fluent in English and Mandarin.

People can apply via e-mail to hamburg-special@sh.china.ahk.de and expo2010@hamburg-messe.de or phone the Hamburg Liaison Office in Shanghai on 5081-2266 (ext 1625).

A training program was launched in the city yesterday to enable sign language interpretation in public sites during the 2010 Shanghai World Expo.

Shanghai has only 50 qualified sign language interpreters at present, the Shanghai Disabled Persons' Federation said.

The 950 trainees, mostly officials at the federation's district branches and volunteers, will initially learn 100 basic signs.
