Heat is on as summer to start a little early
Summer is set to officially arrive with the daily average temperature for the next two days expected to exceed 22 degrees Celsius, according to the Shanghai Meteorological Bureau.
Yesterday was xiaoman, or grain buds, the eighth solar term in the traditional Chinese calendar which indicates that grain seeds are in full growth.
Under brilliant sunshine, the high was 28.5 degrees Celsius at the benchmark Xujiahui weather station, with a low of 17.6 degrees.
Shanghai’s official summer will be announced after five days in a row with a more than 22-degree daily average temperature.
As of yesterday, the city had experienced three days with a daily average temperature of above 22 degrees.
The mercury is set to range from 19 to 31 degrees today, 20 to 33 tomorrow and 21 to 33 on Friday.
The bureau said summer generally begins in late May or early June. The city also had an early summer in 2017 and 2018, when it arrived on May 18 and May 12, respectively.
However, clouds will increase on Saturday and there will be rain overnight with temperatures set to be in the 20s.
