Heat supply truck blast kills 1, scalds 1

ONE worker died and another was injured yesterday when a heat supply truck exploded near a canteen in a local steel-producing area. The injured man, 33, who suffered severe scalding, was in critical condition.

The accident happened about 10:20am in the Tieli residential complex in the city's Baoshan steelmaking factory zone.

The blast shattered many glass windows in the area, pictures posted online showed.

The men were in the truck when the explosion happened, according to a witness. The rear half of the truck was blown off.

The two workers were scalded over 60 percent of their bodies, said Meng Haibiao, a public relations official with Baosteel Group. They are employees of a green energy company that utilizes waste heat from steelmaking and to supply steaming water for customers such as canteens.

The company has a contract with the Baosteel Developing Co, a subsidiary of Baosteel Group.

One of the men was pronounced dead at the hospital and the other was undergoing treatment. Work safety authorities said further investigation is underway.
