Heavy vehicles blamed in 2 deaths
DUMP trucks caused eight traffic accidents in the first quarter of this year leading to 10 casualties, including at least two deaths, officials from the Shanghai Greenery and Public Sanitation Bureau said yesterday.
The bureau said no comparative figures exist for last year.
In the most recent case, a moped with an elderly couple and their five-year-old grandson was hit by a construction truck at Wanping Road S. and Zhongshan Road S2 on April 7. The couple died at the scene while the boy sustained minor injuries. The case was still being investigated.
Traffic police said dump trucks were involved in 27 accidents in the first half of last year, killing 14 people. Truck drivers were responsible for more than half of the cases.
Officials said construction vehicles are a constant headache and current punishments are not severe enough.
