Helicopter battles to save victims in blazing high-rise

FIREFIGHTERS are trying to rescue residents trapped in an apartment building that caught fire in downtown Shanghai.

The fire broke out in the residential building in the city's Jiang'an District around 2pm and soon engulfed the 28-storey building with black smoke rising high into the sky.

Victims hang themselves out on the scaffoldings which cover the whole building for a face-lift.
More than ten residents climbed to the roof and waved frantically at a helicopter which struggled to put down the ladder.

At least 30 people have been rushed to the hospital by 4pm.

Police cordoned off the area around the building on Jiaozhou Road. Traffic on nearby Yuyao Road, Changde Road and Changping Road was also affected.

Influenced by the blaze, windows on nearby buildings became too hot to touch and Internet connection was cut off.

The building, known as Teachers Apartments, houses about 500 families. Many are retired teachers, according to information available online.
