Helicopter crash victim's body found
THE body of a mechanic lost after a helicopter crash at Shanghai's Waigaoqiao Port last Sunday has been found this morning near Changxing Island.
The body was discovered near the Zhenhua Port Machinery Co at the mouth of the Yangtze River, 8 kilometers from where the helicopter crashed, according to the Xinhua news agency report.
Forensic medical experts are checking the body. But police said from the clothes, appearance and a mobile phone found on the body they believe it to be Yang Yongchang.
Yang, 50, went missing after the helicopter with four people on board plunged into the East China Sea at Waigaoqiao Port shortly after taking off from the Snow Dragon ice breaker at around 11:20am on April 12.
A massive rescue effort was launched immediately, and rescuers never gave up hope despite heavy fog hampering their efforts.
The other three, including pilots Yang Hua and Li Baohui, and Tang Lijun, another mechanic, were rescued within minutes of the accident.
The wreckage of the copter was pulled out of the water around midnight on the same day and is being examined by the aviation authority.
Aviation investigators are decoding the "black box" found in the wreckage of the helicopter. Investigators found the helicopter was not recording technical details of the flight.
