High drama domestic dispute

POLICE are still investigating a domestic incident in which a man, who was wielding a knife and half naked, fell from a rain shelter on Saturday night after threatening to kill a woman living in the same apartment on Linfen Road in Zhabei District.

Standing on a rain shelter above the window, the man had confronted police for about two hours before falling unhurt. The woman was also unharmed, and the investigation is ongoing.

Around 9:30pm, a middle-aged man and woman were having a loud argument on the fourth-floor balcony. Eventually they started pushing and shoving each other, attracting the attention of neighbors.

"They had just moved in a few days ago, but almost every night we could hear them arguing," one witness said.

The man even threatened to jump off the balcony, according to witnesses.

But then he stepped off the balcony and onto a rain shelter for a window on the third floor and grabbed the woman by her hair and put a knife to her neck. By this point, police officers had been trying to persuade him to stop for 45 minutes.

About 30 minutes later, the rain shelter was warping under the man's weight. Fearing that both would fall, police broke into the apartment. As they were saving the woman, the man fell.

As he fell, the man grabbed a clothesline. A few minutes later, he fell onto a cushion set up by firefighters.

The man was taken by police, who did not say whether he was in custody.
