Highly anticipated 'Midnight Canteen 2' to hit big screen
THE highly-anticipated heartwarming Japanese film "Midnight Canteen 2" will start its release in China on July 18.
The film's special screening at the 20th Shanghai International Film Festival was a big success, attracting around 1,000 movie buffs.
Today the film's crew, including director Joji Matsuoka and actor Kobayashi Kaoru shared their stories behind shooting at a press conference.
Ever since the debut of the TV series version of "Midnight Canteen" in 2009, the touching stories in the series have nurtured a large base of fans in China. Many viewers note that the series has a huge healing power for people living in a fast-paced and pressured modern society. It manages to heal one's loneliness and solitude in the midnight.
Because of the series' popularity, it was adapted into a movie.
"It is not a big-budgeted production with lavish scenes and backdrops," said Kaoru. "We focus on the stories of ordinary people. The midnight canteen offers them comfort, confidence and strength to move on during the darkest days of their lives."
On his third trip to Shanghai, Kaoru added that he is impressed by rapid changes of the city. He told local movie fans that his favorite Shanghai food is spring onion noodles.
Director Matsuoka, on his second visit to Shanghai, said that he will definitely include Peking Roast Duck if he shoots an episode about Chinese food.
Hong Kong actor Leung Ka-fai, a fan of the Japanese series and film is also directing the Chinese film version of "Midnight Canteen."
Leung gave a present to the Japanese crew, a recipe of red-braised pork written in Chinese calligraphy.
