Highway collision death toll rises to 14

THE death toll of yesterday's head-on collision between a tour bus and a truck outside Shanghai has climbed to 14 people with three of the 20 injured still in critical condition, xinmin.cn reported this morning.

The bus was carrying 33 Shanghai tourists to the neighboring city of Changshu to see a peony flower show when it broke through the guardrail into the opposite lane of Yanjiang Highway and collided head-on with an oncoming truck around 9:30am yesterday.

Changshu police said the truck driver and six passengers on the bus died instantly. Another six people died yesterday in the hospital.

Early this morning a woman in her 20s succumbed to her injuries, bringing the toll up to 14, the report said.

A Shanghai tour operator said all their 33 customers had been insured.

The cause of the accident is still under investigation.
