Historic bridge moved for renovation work
The 107-year-old Zhejiang Road bridge spanning Suzhou Creek was today moved to a repair yard where it will undergo renovations over the next seven months,
Once work is complete, it should be good for another 50 years of service, said officials.
The work will remove rusted components and reduce the bridge’s weight, while maintaining its original structure and appearance.
Starting at 5am, the bridge was first lifted onto a boat, and then transferred onto a truck that took it into a temporary repair yard about 100 meters away.
“Moving is one of the most difficult parts of the project,” project manager Qian Chen told Shanghai Daily. “It involves moving both on the river and on the ground.
“And measures had to be taken to prevent the structure from falling apart during the operation.”
