Hoax suspect detained
SHANGHAI police detained a man who allegedly made a hoax bomb threat to a local supermarket yesterday.
The bomb threat at an RT-Mart supermarket caused panic among residents but police said they found nothing after they cordoned off the area and carried out a thorough search for four hours.
Police caught the 29-year-old man surnamed Chen in suburban Jiading District at 9:30pm, and his motive for making the threatening call is still under investigation.
Staff members at the RT-Mart in Zhabei District received a phone call yesterday morning, saying a bomb had been planted in the supermarket, and the workers then contacted police after finding suspicious bomb-like objects, said Yang Wenxian, a worker at a shoe store inside the supermarket.
The police immediately evacuated the building and the whole area was then cordoned off with the help of security guards.
Local resident Gao Lihua said she saw a bomb disposal team rush into the supermarket with sniffer dogs at about 11am and they came back out one hour later, with no bomb-like objects in their possession.
Police said they found nothing dangerous in the search. The supermarket reopened at 1pm, according to police.
