Hold on to your seat for China’s toilet revolution

A VARIETY of innovative and intelligent toilet-related technologies, equipment and solutions are taking the spotlight at the annual China Toilet Revolution Innovation Expo in Xuhui District, which coincided with World Toilet Day yesterday.

The three-day expo held at the Everbright Convention and Exhibition Center exhibits eco-technology, odor-removal and air-purifying technology, sewage treatment technology, and public and household toilet equipment and innovative products.

It covers 10,000 square meters and will run through today.

A total of 1,810 public toilets in Shanghai’s downtown areas have been providing free toilet paper, and 874 provide hot water for hand washing in winter, the Shanghai Greenery and Public Sanitation Bureau said. Newly opened or renovated public toilets have been installed with unisex facilities, separate rooms for the disabled and safety handrails.

The ratio of cubicles for men and women will be further adjusted and efforts are made to create a clean and comfortable environment for public toilet users, the bureau said.

An environmentally friendly toilet on display at the expo which combines microbial treatment and intelligent control technology can decompose excrement into carbon dioxide and water molecules within three to five hours, creating zero discharge and zero pollution. It can save about 40 tons of water annually.

Some of the technologies have already been used to improve toilet facilities in China’s countryside.

The expo also includes photovoltaic power generation toilets, face-recognition toilet paper dispensers to cut down on wasted paper and organic waste treatment equipment.

The expo is in its fifth year. The event aims to accelerate China’s “toilet revolution,” providing people with modern, standard, clean toilets, and improved toilet management and service quality.
