Holiday warning issued after 3 youngsters down

PARENTS and schools should watch out for children in their care during the summer break after three students drowned last week, officials said yesterday.

In one case, a five-year-old boy from Anhui Province lost his footing when he was playing by the river with friends in Baoshan District last Monday. He slid into the river and drowned.

Two days later, two boys drowned in a river in Yangpu District. They were playing by the river when one boy suddenly fell in and his friend tried to save him. They were both aged around 15.

Drowning had been the primary cause in the deaths of students in summer holidays in the past few years, the local education authority said. Twenty-nine of 35 elementary and middle school students who died last summer were killed in drowning accidents.

"We hope the news release at the beginning of the holiday results in an increased focus on child safety and reduces deaths," said Yang Yongming, director of the general affairs office of the Shanghai Teenage Protection Committee.
