Homeless man rewarded for stopping thief

A Shanghai woman yesterday morning brought food to a homeless man after he helped catch a pickpocket who stole her phone at Nanjing Road West Station, the Shanghai Morning Post reported today.

On Monday, the woman, surnamed Mao, was on the way to her office from the Line 2 station, carrying a package and listening to music on her phone. Suddenly, Mao noticed the music had stopped. She turned around to see a man running off with her phone, the report said.

A homeless man, surnamed Zhu, jumped up and grabbed the thief, forcing him to give up the mobile phone before he ran away. Zhu returned the mobile phone to Mao, who did not notify the police since there was no damage to her phone, the report said.

On Tuesday, Mao gave Zhu some eggs, milk, and bread to thank him for his help.

Zhu told the newspaper he has caught pickpockets in the past.

"I don't think much about it," he was quoted as saying. "When I see trouble, I try to help."
