Hospital blocked over baby death
THE family of a baby who died at a downtown hospital during apparently routine treatment yesterday blocked traffic there as they demanded answers.
Ambulances were delayed for around 20 minutes during the morning protest at Ruijin Hospital in Huangpu District.
Family members staged the demonstration after 15-month-old Sun Quan, who had been burned by a splash of hot water, died during treatment.
The child's father, Sun Changhou, 31, said the boy was burned by 15-millitliters of hot water that spilled from a cup on Saturday afternoon.
Following the accident, Sun Quan was rushed to Ruijin Hospital, but was pronounced dead at 11:55pm, his parents said.
Sun Changhou questioned what happened. He asked: "How could such a slight injury cost my son his life?"
He added that the family had not been allowed to see the child after Saturday afternoon, nor had they seen his body.
Sun said doctors told him that Sun Quan died of a respiratory infection but that the family blamed a medical accident.
Around 15 relatives gathered at the hospital entrance demanding to see the child's body and an explanation for his death. During the demonstration they were involved in an altercation with police and security guards.
Hospital official and witnesses said the relatives blocked traffic for 20 minutes.
A Ruijin Hospital official surnamed Zhang denied that any medical accident had taken place, insisting treatment had strictly followed medical and legal procedures.
She said hospital regulations to reduce the risk of infection prevented the parents seeing the baby during emergency surgery.
Sun Quan was diagnosed to have caught a cold before he was burned, which could explain respiratory infection, the official said.
An autopsy on the child's body will be carried out this week, the parents said following negotiations with hospital officials yesterday evening.
