Hospital ordered to compensate man for alcohol therapy
A man who received liver cirrhosis treatment at a Shanghai hospital asked for cash compensation, believing the hospital's wrong diagnose and therapy led to the deterioration of his symptom, a court heard today.
The hospital, its name not revealed, was ordered to compensate Le Changjiu, who has lost his working abilities, an amount of nearly 100,000 yuan (US$15,450), as its alcohol treatment did have minor influence on the man's health.
Le, in his late 40s, was hospitalized in July 2008 and diagnosed with alcoholic hepatitis and alcohol withdrawal syndrome. But after he received the treatment, including drinking 200mls of yellow wine a day, the man suffered from worse cirrhosis.
He claimed the hospital's diagnose of alcoholic hepatitis was wrong and the alcohol treatment directly resulted in his cirrhosis. Therefore, he demanded a compensation of 500,000 yuan to cover his medical bills and other expenses.
The hospital, on the other hand, insisted that the alcohol treatment would only have minor influence on the man's liver functions, so it was only 10 percent responsible for his deteriorating cirrhosis.
