Hospital sued for disabling newborn's arm

A girl was born with a disabled right arm in a town hospital in Guangdong Province last April due to extensive nerve damage, but the hospital disclaimed any responsibility.

The girl's father Gong Shinan sued the hospital for 1.6 million yuan (US$260,990), arguing that the hospital in Lianjiangkou Town allowed an assistant doctor to handle the delivery. During the labor, the assistant doctor pulled the infant's arm with force and caused nerve damage.

The family also accused the hospital of changing medical records and issuing improper medication.

The hospital said the assistant doctor performed a standard procedure and used proper strength when handling the infant. It pointed out that the mother was 41 years old, a factor attributed to a high incidence of infant deformity.

Wang Hui, a provincial health bureau official, said the girl has been registered as a disabled person and a conclusion would be made regarding compensation.
