House explosion kills 3, gas leak suspected
THREE people were killed after a blast caused by a suspected gas leak destroyed a two-story residential building in suburban Qingpu District early yesterday.
A couple and a man died, city police said.
A total of eight people were living in the house on Shenglibang Street, Zhujiajiao Town, with the rooms rented to migrant workers.
Police said an initial investigation pointed to a gas leak inside the house leading to the explosion.
Neighbors said they heard a couple quarreling in the building around midnight, and about 4am they heard a big bang as the building collapsed.
The dead couple lived on the first floor, according to police. The third victim, a man in his 30s, lived on the second floor.
"We were lucky to survive," said a woman, Chen Linxia, who crawled out from the wreckage with her husband.
Chen's room, also on the first floor, suffered major damage and goods inside were destroyed.
"Suddenly we could see the sky when we were awakened by the huge sound," said another survivor, surnamed Wang.
Half of the residential building collapsed in the blast, creating a scene with bricks and concrete scattered about.
City emergency staff recovered liquid gas cylinders from the house.
Neighbors said the couple, in their 40's, often quarreled.
District police said they were still investigating.
