House protest turns violent
POLICE were called in to break up a protest that turned violent at a condominium complex in Hongkou District on its first day of sales yesterday.
Nearly 100 protestors from a neighboring community gathered at Baohua City Garden's sales office before 9am in Hongkou's Liangcheng area. They complained that the installation of Baohua's foundations had damaged the foundations of their nearby apartment buildings, causing cracks in their walls, Xinmin.cn reported.
One protestor, who was identified as Zhang, told the Website her roof now leaks when it rains.
"We've repaired it several times, but it still leaks as the base foundations were damaged," the report quoted Zhang as saying.
Some protesters eventually tried to smash the Baohua sales office, but they were attacked by a group of unidentified people stationed at the complex gate.
Police stopped the clashes, but the report did not say if anyone was injured.
The attackers claimed they were potential "buyers" of condos at Baohua City Garden. By 11am, the so-called buyers were still keeping protesters away even though most people who wanted to check the condos had left.
