Housing fund launched to assist top academic foreign students
FOREIGN students living in one of the city's biggest international student dorm communities now can apply for a special fund to have the cost of their accommodations covered.
Management of the Tohee International Student Village joined hands with major universities in Yangpu District university town to launch the Tohee International Students Service Fund yesterday. Fund beneficiaries, usually those who excel in academic performance and are from a needy family, can see apartment rents paid for during their four-year study.
The first group, three Nepalese students, was granted accommodation subsidies totaling 200,000 yuan (US$31,483) yesterday from the fund.
They have received a city government scholarship, which can cover only tuition, to study in Fudan University.
"The cost of living in the big metropolis Shanghai is very high," said a subsidy receiver, Bikesh Adhikari, a student of Fudan University. "I was worried that I may drop out of the university because my family cannot afford the high cost of living."
The fund was launched to compete with overseas universities that often offer full scholarships for excellent students. If the beneficiaries' academic performance falls to an unacceptable level, their subsidy will be canceled and provided to other students, according to Fudan University officials.
The international community has nearly 500 apartments and a majority of the tenants are students from Fudan University, Tongji University and Shanghai University of Finance and Economics.
Since its establishment in 2004, Tohee has received nearly 10,000 students from 65 countries and areas. The fully furnished apartments have wireless broadband, telephones and a wide choice of accommodations.
