Hundreds of locals cancel paid trips to S Korea out of MERS spread fear
A large number of Shanghai tourists who have paid for trips to South Korea have canceled their travel plans after 35 MERS cases were confirmed there, travel agencies in the city said today.
Nearly 800 tourists have demanded to cancel their booked tours to South Korea as of 3pm today, Shanghai Spring International Travel Service (Group) Co Ltd said.
The booking of South Korean tour has been severely affected due to the virus, the travel agency said.
Online travel operator Ctrip said it is closely following the virus situation in South Korea and would coordinate with hotels and airlines to reduce the financial loss to tourists if they want to cancel the trip.
But travel agencies said tours to South Korea have not been suspended because there is no warning from China National Tourism Administration so far.
South Korea has replaced Thailand to become the most popular overseas destination for Shanghai travelers in organized tour groups for the first time as it attracted 563,200 tourists in tour groups last year, a surge of 29.93 percent from a year earlier, according to the Shanghai Tourism Administration.
