Hunters arrested for catching dozens of birds at Dongtan Wetland
Police arrested three hunters for illegally catching more than 60 wild migratory birds, including protected species, in Dongtan Wetland in Pudong’s Nanhui area.
The suspects were arrested when they were hunting last Thursday. According to police, the birds were piled up inside a big bag, most of which were already dead due to lack of air.
The birds included turtledoves and brown back shrikes, both of which are on the city government’s protected animal’s list
On November 23, more than 80 ducks were found poisoned to death in the wetland. Two pesticide bags were also found close by, but police have yet to solve the case.
Numerous migratory birds use Dongtan Wetland as a resting spot as they fly south for the winter, according to a volunteer at the wetland surnamed Jiang.
Hunting for birds or other wild animals is banned at Dongtan Wetland.
