Husband held over body on city beach
A MAN who frequently beat his wife killed her and dumped the body on a beach on the city's outskirts, police said yesterday.
The suspect, Zhang Shun, was brought in soon after the murder on August 27, officers said. His wife, Xu Qi, died of several stab wounds at their home in the Pudong New Area, police said.
A friend of Zhang's, who was asked to help transport the body without knowing what it was, had suspicions and called the police, sparking the murder hunt.
Xu's body was found on a beach in suburban Fengxian District, police said.
The killing and the violence shocked the family of Xu, who was the mother of a nine-month-old son.
"I would never have thought that Zhang was such a brutal person," said the victim's father.
Zhang, who had a stable job, seemed a gentle person, other family members said.
The couple met in early 2010 and prepared to marry in March that year. Xu's family did not agree to the marriage at first, but relented on learning their daughter was pregnant.
However, Zhang was said to beat his wife frequently. An aunt said the family saw bruises around her eyes days before the killing. "She told us she did not want a divorce out of concern for their young son," said a family member.
