ID cards set to have fingerprint details
FINGERPRINTS will be included in information collected for issuing new identity cards, and existing holders will be expected over time to provide these too.
This disclosure came as state lawmakers yesterday reviewed a law draft on ID cards.
They also said first generation identity cards - which, unlike second generation cards, do not include a microchip - are expected to be withdrawn by 2013.
More than 94 percent of residents now use second generation ID cards, said Shanghai police.
Some elderly residents still have older ID cards. Shanghai began issuing second generation cards in 2004.
Putting fingerprint information into ID cards will improve safety and help prevent forgeries, said the police. They will also aid institutions, such as hospitals, in confirming ID, they added.
