IPR cases skyrocket in region
UNDER the drive of last year's national crackdown on counterfeit products, the number of criminal infringement cases increased dramatically in the wealthy Yangtze River Delta Region, officials announced on World Intellectual Property Day yesterday.
Lu Guoqiang, director of the Shanghai Intellectual Property Administration, credited the joint efforts of police, prosecutors and courts in cities in the region, which proved to be very efficient when a case was related to multiple cities.
Last year, Shanghai courts settled 277 intellectual property criminal cases, about 2.5 times the number of 2010. The figure in Zhejiang Province rose even more - to 560 cases, up 409 percent over 2010, according to the region's IPR white paper. In Jiangsu Province, police investigated more than 2,000 criminal cases involving IPR infringement, with 1.8 billion yuan (US$286 million) involved. The case number was seven times that of the previous year.
