Illegal cabbies will lose license points
ILLEGAL taxi drivers in Shanghai will have all their license points deducted when found using fake plates to cover their illegitimate business, traffic authorities said yesterday as they continue an ongoing battle to get so-called cloned cabs off the city's streets.
Illegal drivers can also be fined up to 50,000 yuan (US$8,150) and have their cars confiscated, said traffic authorities, though many drivers are unwilling to pay the fine and get their cars back.
Officials said the illegal operators often "just buy another cheap second-hand vehicle and go into the business again."
In a two-day campaign that started on Monday, authorities said they had caught 13 cloned taxis.
On Monday, a traffic law enforcement team seized a driver in a cloned cab in Zhabei District. His license points were deducted and he was fined 3,000 yuan, police said.
