Imitation guns for sale in city park

TRADERS at Changfeng Park in Putuo District are selling illegal imitation guns, officials admitted yesterday.

Members of the public said if people ask booth owners whether "metal guns" are available, they are offered imitation guns - which they are sold as "toys."

Witnesses said the guns are about 14 centimeters long and sell for between 100 yuan (US$15) and 200 yuan.

Booth owners advise customers not to take the guns on to Metro trains or buses.

Park officials said they provide food sold at the booths, but booth owners can stock toys independently.

Officials admitted that they have already found some booth owners selling imitation guns. They said they inspect the booths and confiscate any guns they discover.

However, officials admit they don't inspect every day.

Officials said they will order the vendors to stop selling the banned items.

Selling and owning imitation guns is illegal in China, due to safety concerns.

Last November, the toughened glass of a hair salon in Yangpu District was damaged by a steel ball shot from an imitation gun.
