Infrastructure projects to take advantage of 3D modeling technology
Cutting-edge 3D modeling technology will be used to improve the construction speed of infrastructure projects around the city and lessen the impact on traffic.
Shanghai Municipal Engineering Design Institute today issued a Civil Design Fabrication system along with Dassault Systems, a world leader in 3D design and modeling, to cut the duration of projects “from months long to weeks long,” said Jiang Lijian, IT manager with the institute’s digital engineering design center.
Most roads, bridges and tunnels in the city were designed with traditional charts, Jiang told a forum.
The intelligent model-based process can display the building structure in three dimensions with detailed information such as height and even the diameter of water pipes.
Dassault Systems has worked with Tongji University to provide the software and training programs to its students, said Marty Doscher, Dassault’s vice president of architecture, engineering and construction.
Jiang said the new 3D modeling system has been used for the design of Yanggao Road S. Tunnel, which is now under construction. The project is expected to be completed months earlier because of 3D modeling technology, Jiang said.
Engineers with the institute used the 3D system to design the roads and tunnel parts. They also simulated the impact on nearby traffic to reduce it to a minimum during construction.
