Innovation park at FTZ to focus on NEV sector

A FUTURE Space innovation park was unveiled in the newly expanded Shanghai free trade zone in Fengxian District on Saturday to mainly focus on the intelligent and new-energy vehicle sectors.

The innovation park in the eastern part of the southern outskirts is targeted at being an industrial heartland of the Lingang Special Area of the China (Shanghai) Pilot Free Trade Zone and a stage for the integrated development of the Yangtze River Delta region, the Fengxian government said.

It will gather the world’s leading industries on 5G, or the next generation of mobile communication technology, artificial intelligence, Internet of Things, new materials and NEVs, said Gu Yi, deputy director of Fengxian.

Two-thirds of Fengxian, covering 14 square kilometers, is part of the new section of the free trade zone.

The district started planning on the future space park in 2018 after US electric carmaker Tesla announced it would build its first overseas plant — worth US$7 billion — in Lingang. The gigafactory will start production by the end of the year.

The park mainly focuses on the supporting industries for NEVs. It aims to attract investment and businesses from the suppliers of Tesla as well as other international enterprises. The suburban district set up a promotion office for the future space park on Saturday.

Currently, the automobile supporting industries in Fengxian have an annual output of about 16 billion yuan (US$2.26 billion), accounting for 10 percent of the district’s total annual industrial production.

According to the blueprint, the innovation park will be gradually expanded to cover Fengxian new town, Lingang-Fengxian industrial park and the Situan Town in the easternmost part of the district. Key parts of intelligent and new-energy cars will be manufactured within the park.

The park will also cooperate with Lingang Group, Shanghai Jiao Tong University and leading automobile firms to carry out research and development. A batch of innovation platforms, engineering laboratories and safety certification centers have been planned in the park.

“The Future Space will become a new attraction of the Lingang Special Area,” said Zhuang Mudi, Party secretary of Fengxian. The space will actively support the development of the newly expanded FTZ and highlight its development quality and speed, Zhuang added.
