'Iron Man' storms science fest

FIVE 3D printers and a rescue robot were on display at the opening of the Shanghai Science Festival in the Pudong New Area yesterday.

One of the highlights was the "Iron Man" rescue robot designed by students from Shanghai Jiao Tong University.

The robot has six iron feet and is controlled by remote instructions from a computer. It can carry up to 100 kilograms and keep walking for more than four hours on one battery charge.

It can be used in rescue work from fires or nuclear radiation.

Meanwhile, it was the second time 3D printers have been displayed to the public after their debut earlier at Shanghai International Technology Fair.

Visitors had the chance to watch the entire process of a plain model being printed into color.

He Ming, regional manager of Beijing TierTime Technology Co Ltd, a producer of 3D printers, said: "3D printers can help children develop their imaginations by printing the models they design."

The Shanghai Science Festival continues until Saturday.
