Irregular heartbeat top heart problem for local young people: survey
Coronary heart disease, irregular heartbeat and hypertension are the three cardiac diseases among local patients with cardiac vascular diseases, according to a survey covering over 20,000 patients.
Women develop heart disease later than men and irregular heartbeat is the major cardiac problem among office workers, said the survey, which was released ahead of the World Heart Day on Sunday.
A total of 24,186 patients visiting cardiology department participated the survey led by Shanghai Yodak Cardio-Thoracic Hospital. About 27 percent of patients have coronary heart disease, while 10 percent have irregular heartbeat and 8 percent with hypertension.
“More young and middle aged people are detected with coronary disease, which can be related with unhealthy lifestyle like smoking and too much alcohol and sleeping too late,” said Dr Zhang Dadong, president of Shanghai Yodak. “People below 35 have covered 2 percent of coronary heart disease patients. Obesity, hypertension and smoking are all risky factors for coronary disease and people should avoid such factors since childhood.”
The survey found irregular heartbeat is the top heart problem for people between 21 and 30 years old and people at this age box covers 21 percent of all people with the disease.
“We find irregular heartbeat is prevalent among office workers between 20 and 45 years old and male patients take the majority. It can be related with strong workload and pressure,” Zhang said. “Most patients needn’t medication, while some patients with serious symptoms need medicine.”
Experts said estrogen can protect cardiac vascular system, so women usually develop heart problems after menopause. High awareness and health check after 45 years old are important for women to avoid heart diseases.
A daily of 30 minutes quick walking can drop 50 percent risk of heart diseases, experts said.
