Island celebrates tradition

SRI Lanka, the island nation known as the pearl of the Indian Ocean, celebrates its National Pavilion day today.

The 2,000-square-meter pavilion in Zone A is themed "Tradition to Modernity."

The pavilion's ceiling is colored with traditional batik craft and the walls are decorated with flags from the land of tea and spices.

Five distinctive cities are showcased in an innovative and artistic way to review their history and transition to modern urban life.

Valuable urban heritage sites are presented to explain how Sri Lanka seeks to achieve development alongside preservation of its cultural heritage.

Maps, models, outdoor scenes, images and artistic creations explain intangible heritage.

Traditional dances, music and other cultural heritage will be presented on small stages.

The nation is famous for its Buddhist sites, Ceylon tea and gemstones.

The world-famous tea and spices are on sale in pavilion shops.
