Jade Buddha Temple hosts cultural week

Jade Buddha Temple has launched a cultural week that includes a music performance by monks, a student calligraphy competition and lectures on Buddhism.

The temple’s Buddhist orchestra will perform a concert of sutras in Sanskrit.

Ten members of the orchestra were sent to study at the Shanghai Theater Academy last year.

Also, about 100 students will take part in a calligraphy competition during the cultural week, which ends on Friday. They will be asked to write four Chinese characters from Buddhist scriptures within an hour. Temple abbot Shi Juexing and members of the Shanghai Calligraphers Association will select the best works.

Senior temple monks will give psychology lectures to the public.

The temple will also donate money to support a scholarship with Fudan University, giving help to students from less-fortunate families.

The temple is on Anyuan Road in Jing’an District.
