Jail, fines over electricity theft
SIX people were jailed or fined yesterday by a city court for stealing electricity.
It was the first time the city has laid charges for power stealing against residents. A man surnamed Zhang, who helped dozens of households to refit their meters to evade electricity charges, received a 3 1/2-year prison sentence and was fined 5,000 yuan (US$732) by Hongkou District People's Court. Zhang told the court that he refitted electric meters for five other defendants and had earned about 7,000 yuan via the practice over the years. Two residents received suspended jail sentences of 3 1/2 years and were fined 5,000 yuan each. The others were all fined 5,000 yuan.
