Jail for bomb hoax blackmailer
A BLACKMAILER who tried to gain 25,000 yuan (US$3,660) from an Auchan supermarket with bomb threats was jailed for five and a half years yesterday by Yangpu District No.1 People's Court.
The 18-year-old man surnamed Wang sent three cellphone messages to the supermarket, threatening to blow it up unless it paid the money before 5pm on February 16.
Supermarket managers called police at once, who evacuated the building and combed the area, but found no explosives, reported Sina.com today.
The supermarket lost at least 200,000 yuan during the four-hour shutdown, the court heard.
Wang had also tried to blackmail another store earlier that month but failed.
Wang, who was caught at a hotel five days later, said he wanted revenge because he once lost his wallet at the supermarket.
The court charged Wang with spreading information on terrorism to harm public security.
