Jail term upheld for former education boss

SHANGHAI No.2 Intermediate People's Court has upheld the 10-year jail term for a top education official in Shanghai's Zhabei District for taking 535,000 yuan (US$78,373) in bribes.

Huang Mengyuan, former director of Zhabei Education Bureau, took 500,000 yuan from Shanghai Baotong Real Estate Co Ltd in August 2005 to have the bureau buy a plot in Baoshan District for 75 million yuan from the company, today's Oriental Morning Post reported.

The company bought the plot in May 2003 for 68 million yuan but found the plot was zoned only for education rather than commercial housing projects.

Huang is also convicted of taking 35,000 yuan in early 2003 from Lin Wenxing, manager of a company related to the bureau, to help Lin keep the job after retirement.
