Japanese uni offers record scholarship to Chinese

ONE of Japan's top universities, Waseda University, launched a 2.55-billion-yen (US$28.07 million) scholarship fund yesterday in Shanghai to assist Chinese students.

The scholarship, the biggest offered by a Japanese university to Chinese students, was funded by a Taiwanese food group. It will benefit 425 students pursuing postgraduate programs in the university in the next five years, today's Oriental Morning Post reported.

Each student will get 6 million yen over two years to support their tuition and living expenses at Waseda.

The first 50 recipients will be named in September next year, mainly students from four Shanghai universities and Zhejiang University as well as two Taiwan universities. The scholarship will later expand to students from other schools across the country, the newspaper cited Waseda officials as saying.

The four local universities are Fudan, Jiao Tong, Tongji, and Shanghai University of Finance and Economics. The Taiwan schools are the Chengchi University and the Taiwan University.
